Lara Miletic wins NSW Minister’s award for community languages

Last Monday night at a gala presentation held at the University of NSW in Sydney, 13-year old Croatian language student Lara Miletic was awarded a NSW Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement in the ‘commended’ (senior) category.

The award, which recognised and rewarded both effort and achievement for Croatian language study was not the first accolade Lara has received for her efforts in learning and promoting Croatian as not only a vital community language, but one which allows Croatians in the Diaspora to more firmly connect with their homeland.

A popular student of the Bonnyrigg Croatian language Saturday school in Sydney, Lara, whose mother Koraljka is also a Croatian language teacher at the same school, says she is delighted with this award.

“I’m thrilled that not only my efforts in learning Croatian have been recognised, but also that the school and their hard-working volunteer teachers have been honored at the same time.”

“I think learning Croatian and keeping our language alive is more important than ever – both for me as an individual and for our wider community here in Australia,” she says.
