The Pope gets olive trees while Kolinda gets heartburn

According to a story in SBS, “Chocolategate” started with Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic visiting a kindergarten in the Adriatic city of Dubrovnik and handing out the treats to the delighted kids.

However, while it was a sweet gesture, there was one major problem: some of the chocolate came from Serbia.

And the president could not have picked a worse day to hand out Serbia chocolate as it was on December 6, the 25th anniversary of a crucial battle to defend the besieged Dubrovnik from Serb forces at the start of Croatia’s 1990s independence war.

Furious parents complained their children should not have been given Serbia chocolate on that day of all days.

Not to Kolinda- check the gifts yourself next time.

But on the other side of the Adriatic Sea, Pope Francis who will celebrate his 80th birthday next weekend on 17 December will be gifted a wood-framed glasses made from wood from a 1,600 year-old olive tree from the Croatian island of Brijuni.

The gift will come from Viktor and Sanda Jeromil. Viktor is an expert wood-crafter and the idea to make Pope Francis a special pair of wood glasses came from a friend.

I guess it’s still good to be the Pope….at least the gift actually comes from Croatia- unlike Kolinda’s chocolate.
